Korean Japchae

gluten free pasta Korean style

Whoa! I spied a new solution to my ancestral (at least one generation 😉 craving for pasta—gluten free pasta that is. I read it again, yup just sweet potato. Now here is a food, a real food with ingredients that don’t require a chemistry degree to decipher. At a whopping 47 carbohydrates per serving this is not going to be part of any weight loss … Continue reading

Fuel for Athletic Performance: natural sports drink power.

I originally wrote this as a letter to my son’s football team—teammates and parents asked me why “the second half bust”: fatigue. Truly, this applies to everyone looking to have athletic energy and reduce fat. All those sugary Gatorade drinks and sweet game treats are literally killing athletic performance–and ability to burn fat for fuel. Switch to natural sports drinks and the correct game prep plans. Electrolytes are only part of the story… And the team? Currently #1. Want some help with ideas? Check out this site’s fabulous and “kid-tested” recipes including the now-famous “Football Chicken Satay.” Dear Wolverines, you R-O-C-K! … Continue reading

Breakfast

One of the most important meals of our day, breakfast can make or break your energy levels, not just today but also tomorrow. The problem is that most busy households go for a bowl of cereal and milk, orange juice, probably some coffee. We consume a bolus of blood-sugar pumping carbohydrates (a whopping 100+ grams if you use the nifty tool here and assume the “28gm cereal serving” is ¼ cup—who eats just ¼ cup?), then off to work or school… where soon enough we run out of energy, the insulin we just made forces our blood sugar low, we get tired, cranky and … Continue reading

Berry & Nut Muffins

Two key ingredients in these grain free muffins have interesting health properties: maple syrup and coconut flour. Dr. Seeram’s research focus is to educate people about the benefits of foods made from plants and berries. “We know that plants must have strong antioxidant mechanisms because they are in the sun throughout … Continue reading
