Hiking, Biking, Kayaking, Edibles for Summer Fun!

tasty energy bars from natural ingredientsIt is summer! What started out as a simple request for child-friendly and healthy, portable snacks for little league became a quest to also solve no-refrigeration snacks for a sea kayak trip, cabin camping, and we still have a few backpack trips planned. So, some time has passed since I posted anything on this blog—and I realize the bad blog manners here, apologies—anyone living in Alaska will understand what happens in May and June though…

Oh, back to the topic: the need for healthy and portable snacks for our summer adventures. The good news is that we have some great ideas!

First idea is Billy’s Energy Bars. Although I can hardly claim this recipe, I was asking clients one day… and… voila!

When I need portable, no-refrigeration snacks, I usually break out the dehydrator. Because you can completely control the ingredients (read: herky jerky is a healthy snack favorite!sugar), this kitchen appliance is great especially if you love fruit and jerky. And for those of you looking to pack lighter fare for backpacking, a dehydrator is indispensible to avoid the prepackaged salt cardboard that pretends to be camping food.

My favorite dried snacks?

Herky Jerky

and Zucchini chips

That said, since not all of us have a dehydrator, you can use the kitchen oven. But I’ll be honest: it can be tricky. The slow method is best. And by slow, I mean practically a whole day at your oven’s lowest possible heat level and with the door slightly cracked so air can circulate. It can’t be denied that by far the easiest and most fool-proof way is a dehydrator. You can walk away and let your dehydrator do the work.

I sure hope you all are having a marvelous summer! Stop by and see us and don’t hesitate to comment or send in your culinary creations.

Hi Annis, might be a long answer… our skin backs up when our other systems for ridding the body of waste can’t keep up. If your liver, digestive tract, kidneys, even lungs are all overworked because the amount of “junk” going into your body is too great, this will show up on your skin. And also, because you are in the teenage years, your hormones are resetting–this also asks the liver and digestive tract to do additional work in other ways. Your body needs more genuine building blocks than it is getting for this massive onslaught of toxics.

One for one, teenagers with clear skin are avoiding the junk: this means sugar, pizza, pasta, cakes, cookies, chips… *and* instead choosing to help their body out by eating plenty of green veggies and non-seed oils (butter from pastured cows, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil…). You have to give your body the tools it needs to rid itself of toxics while minimizing how many toxics are going in. Food is 80% of it. The next big category is perfumes including in shampoos, lotions, laundry detergents… Clean up your skin by rebalancing these areas.

Feel free to write back if have more questions.
      Best,
      Marie
